How to Keep Your Home Cool Without Breaking the Budget

Fraser Valley summers have a way of arriving fast and staying warm. For homeowners without central air conditioning, or those trying to keep their energy bills from climbing, a few well-timed habits make a bigger difference than most people expect. Staying cool doesn’t have to mean running the AC around the clock or investing in expensive equipment. The right combination of airflow, shade, and timing can keep your home comfortable through even the hottest stretch of July.

Use Fans Strategically

Ceiling fans should rotate counterclockwise in summer to push cool air downward. Place a portable fan near an open window in the evening to pull in cooler night air. Fans use a fraction of the energy of air conditioning and can make a room feel several degrees cooler.

Block the Sun During Peak Hours

Close blinds and curtains on south- and west-facing windows during the hottest part of the day. Blackout curtains or reflective window film can significantly reduce the amount of heat entering your home. This is one of the simplest and most effective cooling strategies.

Ventilate at the Right Times

Open windows in the early morning and evening when outdoor temperatures drop. Create cross-ventilation by opening windows on opposite sides of your home. Close everything up once the outdoor temperature rises above your indoor temperature.

Reduce Internal Heat Sources

Avoid using the oven during the hottest part of the day. Switch to the BBQ, stovetop, microwave, or cold meals when temperatures peak. Switch off lights and electronics that generate heat when not in use. Even small appliances contribute to indoor temperatures.

A comfortable home is a happy home, no matter the season. If you’re thinking about your next move or want trusted real estate advice, the Schreder Brothers team is always here.
