As Fire Prevention Month begins this October across Canada, it serves as an important reminder for homeowners to review their household emergency readiness. There is frequently a gap between knowing fire safety fundamentals and actively implementing them. In reality, minor maintenance oversights – such as an unserviced smoke alarm or a neglected, lint-heavy dryer vent – are often the primary catalysts for household emergencies. Investing a few moments in a proactive safety check this month is a simple, effective way to safeguard your property and ensure long-term peace of mind.
Test and Maintain Your Smoke Detectors
Test smoke alarms monthly and replace batteries at least once a year. Smoke detectors themselves should be replaced every 10 years. Make sure there’s a working detector on every level of your home and inside each sleeping area.
Have a Fire Escape Plan
Every household should have a fire escape plan with two exits from every room and a designated meeting point outside. Practice it with your family at least twice a year. In condos and apartments, know where the nearest stairwell exits are and never use elevators during a fire.
Kitchen and Dryer Safety
Cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires in Canada. Never leave cooking unattended and keep flammable items away from the stove. Clean your dryer’s lint trap after every use and have the vent duct professionally cleaned at least once a year. Lint buildup is a significant fire hazard.
Heating Safety
If you use space heaters, keep them at least one metre away from furniture, curtains, and bedding. Never leave them running unattended or overnight. If you have a fireplace, have the chimney inspected and cleaned annually before the heating season begins.
